Everything Else Is Already Within a Couple of Miles

Here is a question worth asking before you buy anywhere in this category: what happens after you lock up?

At most of these developments, the answer is that you get in your car and drive twenty minutes before you reach anything. They get built on cheap ground off a frontage road because cheap ground off a frontage road is what pencils out. There is a gas station. That is the amenity.

What is actually around us

  • A golf course directly across the road, recently renovated, with a new restaurant
  • A movie theater
  • Restaurants, coffee and gas, all inside a couple of miles
  • Ten acres of pond and wooded preserve on the back side that will never be built on

None of that is ours. That is the point. We did not have to build a restaurant, because there are restaurants. We did not have to invent something for people to do after four in the afternoon, because St. Michael already had it.

Why it matters more than it sounds like it does

You are not buying a parking space. You are buying somewhere you are going to spend Saturdays. The difference between a place people visit and a place people stay is whether the day can keep going once the door comes down: nine holes, dinner, a movie, back to the suite.

An isolated building can be a very good building. It still ends your day at the gate.
